Josef Newgarden claimed his third victory of the 2022 IndyCar season last time out at the Sonsio Grand Prix at Road America.

The Nashville native moves up to third in the standings thanks to that result, while Indy500 winner Marcus Ericsson extended his championship lead with a composed drive to P2.

The race proved a tense strategic battle between Newgarden, who started from second place in the Team Penske Chevrolet, and polesitter Alexander Rossi.

Rossi got away well at the race start, fending off the onrushing Newgarden and maintained a strong pace out front, defending to the inside as the Team Penske driver launched an attack around the outside of Turn 1 on Lap 7.

Championship contender Will Power saw his race crumble in front of his eyes on the next lap as he was speared off the track while defending from the charging Devlin DeFrancesco.

The pivotal moment came in the pit lane on Lap 15 as excellent work from the Team Penske crew allowed Newgarden to re-enter ahead of the No.28 Andretti Autosport car.

Newgarden looked to be cruising to victory out front before Pato O'Ward's Arrow McLaren car suffered an engine failure, bringing out the caution and allowing the pack to Constantina up with just four laps left to run.

Rossi hoped to launch an attack on the race leader at the restart, but the Andretti Autosport driver was instead forced to defend from the Chip Ganassi Racing Honda of Marcus Ericsson, who swiftly took P2 with a calculated lunge up the inside of Turn 1.

Newgarden surged forward, taking the chequered flag to claim his third victory of the 2022 season and in doing so earned the $1 million PeopleReady Force for Good Challenge prize pool.
