Original story - The Overwatch Lunar New Year Event for 2021 is almost here!

Over the years, Overwatch has become known for fantastic in-game events amongst other things. The Overwatch Lunar New Year Event is one of the highlights alongside Winter Wonderland and Summer Games.

Traditionally, the Overwatch Lunar New Year Event is all about the Chinese New Year.

It also, more generally, is often seen as a celebration of Asian Culture and festivals outside of the New Years celebration.

Confirmed Release Date

Overwatch developers Blizzard has confirmed the start time for the 2021 Lunar New Year Event.

The Year of the Ox celebrations begin on February 4 and will continue for three weeks until February 25.

This was confirmed via the official Overwatch Twitter: @PlayOverwatch.

This is somewhat unusual as in-game events don't usually start on Thursdays for Overwatch, however, it's good that we finally have an official release date.

Release Date

This year, the Overwatch Event is going to celebrate the Year of the Ox!

Below, we've listed the previous Lunar New Year Event dates:

  • Year of the Rooster (2017) - 24/01 until 13/02;
  • Year of the Dog (2018) - 08/02 until 06/03;
  • Year of the Pig (2019) - 24/01 until 18/02;
  • Year of the Rat (2020) - 16/01 until 05/02;

Looking at this, we can see that the 2021 Lunar New Year Event is due to start very soon.

Overwatch Seasonal Events usually always start on a Tuesday, too. With this in mind, the event will most-likely go live on one of the following dates:

  • 2nd February 2021
  • 9th February 2021
  • 16th February 2021

Blizzard often leaves it to the last minute to announce the release date of in-game events, and it seems as if this year's Lunar New Year celebrations are no different.

New Lunar New Year Skins

Alongside each Seasonal Event, Blizzard often adds a number of themed skins to Overwatch's heroes.

Last year's Lunar New Year Event was no different, with a number of heroes getting skins last year.

These event-specific cosmetics are available via Lunar Lootboxes that act as a temporary replacement for the duration of the event.

In the past, in the build-up to a new event, Blizzard often teases the new cosmetics that will be available during the event via Social Media.

Returning Skins

Much like the Winter Wonderland Event, previous Lunar New Year Event skins are available during the current Lunar New Year Event.

This means you will be able to get your hands on all of last year's Lunar New Year Event skins that you missed out on.

Below, we've listed just a few of the returning skins that will be available throughout the event:

  • D.Va - Palanquin (Legendary)
  • Moira - Mask Dance (Legendary)
  • Sombra - Face Changer (Legendary)
  • Bastion - Rooster (Epic)
  • Winston - Ancient Chinese Bronze (Epic)
  • Wrecking Ball - Papercutting (Epic)

During the Overwatch Lunar New Year Event, the Lunar Lootbox will replace the regular Lootbox and contain these event-specific items alongside the base collection.

Limited-Time Modes

During last year's Overwatch Lunar New Year Event, CTF Blitz was the limited-time game mode.

CTF Blitz was a faster-paced Capture the Flag mode in which both flags were closer, but six captures were needed to win.
