Cloud9 vs Lyon Gaming: 2017 World Championship Play-In Elimination Stage preview, prediction & live stream

Cloud9 are coming up against Lyon Gaming in a Bo5 to decide who enters Worlds Group Stage! Who has the upper hand?

C9 have asserted their dominance with a 4-0 group stage run. Whenever they secured a laning lead, they’d push it to the extreme through superior jungle presence and individual skill. And even in the match where Dire Wolves challenged their early game, C9 swiftly came back with strong macro and stellar teamfighting.

Lyon Gaming share their opponents’ affinity for aggression. They thrive on clutch early game ganks and laning phase outplays, trying to find as many advantages as possible to make a smooth transition into the mid game. But once the late game hits, Lyon lose their fangs and barely scratch the surface of a competent macro game.

Top Lane Matchup

The ‘top die’ days are back! With a 7.0 KDA and 7.8 CS per minute, Impact showed why he was hailed as one of the most overwhelming top laners in the world. He has the perfect mix of raw talent and veteran experience that makes him ideal for the current iteration of Cloud9.

Lyon’s Jirall has also made his presence known in the top lane. Holding a 4.4 KDA and 7.4 CS per minute, he had a number of impressive showings on carries, but he struggled to replicate this success on tanks. Considering the fact that he was already pressured by the likes of 957 and PvPStejos, challenging Impact will be a tall order for him.

Verdict: C9 Impact finds a win in the top lane.

Jungle Matchup

Contractz has also proven his worth. Sporting a 16.00 KDA and 5.0 CS per minute, he always found himself in the right place and at the right time to snowball Cloud9’s advantages.

Oddie has done the same job for Lyon Gaming. With a 5.0 KDA and 3.9 CS per minute, he’s a strong ganking jungler that does everything in his power to find those early game kills. Even so, Contractz seems like a more well-rounded player of the two.

Verdict: C9 Contractz claims his jungle victory.

Mid Lane Matchup

In the mid lane, all eyes are on Jensen. With an 11.3 KDA and 9.1 CS per minute, C9’s ace showed up by routinely dismantling one mid laner after another.

Of course, Seiya performs a similar role on Lyon Gaming, as evidenced by his 20.0 KDA and 8.7 CS per minute. But even he will have to take a step back in face of Jensen’s mechanical prowess.

Verdict: C9 Jensen breaks open the mid lane.

Bot Lane Matchup

The bottom lane has always been one of Cloud9’s weaker points. Sporting an 8.5 KDA and 9.3 CS per minute, Sneaky is a seasoned marksman and a great teamfighter, but he lacks the laning presence. And while Smoothie (14.3 KDA) is impressive with his roams, he isn’t that dominant in 2v2s either.

Meanwhile, Lyon’s duo is all about the aggression. Holding a 9.5 KDA and 10.2 CS per minute, WhiteLotus is a playmaking AD carry that isn’t afraid of jumping into the fray to tear through a teamfight. To compensate for these tendencies, Genthix (5.1 KDA) is often stuck on defensive supports, but he’s more than capable of following his superstar AD carry.

Verdict: Lyon’s WhiteLotus and Genthix outmuscle the enemy bottom lane.

This doesn’t look good for Lyon Gaming. Almost every single C9 player can match them early on, and things will only get worse for them as the game goes on. Cloud9 are a far better team when it comes to macro and 5v5s—and they’ll prove it by scoring a 3-1 victory.
