Hitman 3 has broken series records with its launch week sales, with the PlayStation 5 edition accounting for a majority of physical sales.
IO Interactive's third-person stealth game was released for Microsoft Windows, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Stadia, and Nintendo Switch on January 20 202, and marks the final entry in their "World of Assassination" Trilogy.
Hitman 3 Tops the UK sales charts
The UK boxed charts have seen Hitman 3 take the No.1 spot this week, with launch sales up 17% over previous entry Hitman 2.
GamesIndustry.biz has covered the current UK chart, which sees Hitman 3 coming out on top over Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
Only 800 copies separate the two, which shows that Nintendo's village life sim is still doing excellent numbers nearly a year after release.
The PS5 edition of the game came out on top of the sales, accounting for 49% of all sales. The Xbox version sold 27%, and the PS4 version the final 25%.
The chart only accounts for physical copies however, and the majority of sales for Hitman 2 were made digitally.
IO Interactive have already confirmed that its digital sales are a first for the franchise, tweeting out an impressive spread of review scores along with the news.
The boxed release was handled by Square Enix, the publisher of the original 2016's Hitman. Square Enix let go of IO Interactive after Hitman 1, and Hitman 2 was published in 2018 by WB Interactive Entertainment.
What's next for IO Interactive?
Now that the "World of Assassination" Trilogy is finished, IO Interactive are hard at work on their next title, which is a James Bond game so far only know as Project 007, which Realsport 101 reported in November 2020.
So far very little is know beyond about the game beyond the Teaser trailer that they made available, which is available below:
On the game's website it states that,
"Featuring a wholly original Bond story, players will step into the shoes of the world's favourite Secret Agent to earn their 00 status in the very first James Bond origin story."
As such it seems that the game won't be focusing on any particular movie and will instead be its own stand alone story.
