What are the Ashes of War in Elden Ring?
Following the line of FromSoftware games, Elden Ring features the satisfying combat that fans of the developers know and love as well as ways to upgrade their characters. It can be extremely challenging for the average video game player but for the skilled veteran who knows the ins and outs of the Soulsborne games, it can be a treat.
Both of these types of players have one thing in common though, which is the want of upgrading items. That's where Ashes of War come in.
Ashes of War are hidden items that can be found throughout the map, meaning that it'd be best that players should be paying attention to them as they progress through the game. Alternatively, they can be obtained via killing certain bosses or killing Teardrop Scarabs, Elden Ring's version of Crystal Lizards from the Dark Souls series.

How to use Ashes of War in Elden Ring
Ashes of War can be combined with various weapons or shields to give them the ability to carry out special attacks or magic. These unique moves can be done by pressing the LT2/LT on the controller while the enchanted item is equipped.
It's worth noting that the weapons can only be combined with the Ashes of War at Sites of Grace and, most importantly, aren't consumed when added to a weapon or shield. This means that combining an Ashes of War with a weapon or shield can be done indefinitely, players just have to be at a Site of Grace to do so.
Additionally, Ashes of War have another extra effect, they also increase certain stats while decreasing others. Examples of this are: some of the Ashes of War, in particular, increase dexterity but decrease strength and base damage in return. They all vary on the type of enchanment.
This means that prior to making a decision pertaining to an Ashes of War and a desired weapon or shield, players will have to be aware of some of the possible drawbacks in order to get preferred strength.
