The fact that Zelda was freed from Ganon’s captivity at the end of Breath of the Wild means that she very well could return as a playable character.
Zelda could offer a load of variety to the gameplay and mechanics that we have grown so used to, but developing this feature may be harder than we initially thought.

There were plenty of reports when Animal Crossing: New Horizons launched that many players had frame rate issues when using co-op features.
Other issues arise with the question about if the co-op features would extend to online play, but let's not run before we can walk.
There are a few things that the developers could do, considering how the team behind Breath of the Wild's sequel is more than likely well versed in the limitations of the Switch.
If Breath of the Wild 2 is being developed with co-op in mind, the game most definitely needs to be designed to get around any hardware problems.
RUNNING DRY: With memories of the Kingdom of Hyrule being established throughout the original, how will the developers create more content to explore?
Nintendo would need to address questions of players' distances from each other when playing locally for starters.

This means that there is practically no chance of co-op DLC arriving later should it launch without multiplayer features.
For this very reason we say, hold onto some hope of a playable Zelda.
While it is still unlikely considering how it has not been addressed by Nintendo, development is still underway for the upcoming sequel.
There is still plenty of time for a statement to be made.
