It was no surprise when Gearbox announced that Battleborn would be shutting down.
Released around the same time as Overwatch it got overshadowed but other more popular titles and never managed to find its footing in the gaming world.
When Are Battleborn Servers Shutting Down
Battleborn will go completely offline on January 25, 2021.
This will also include any single-player options, meaning the game will become completely unplayable.
The game was removed from digital stores in November 2019, only allowing currently players to continue to play the game, its digital currency was also removed from the game in February 2020.
Why Battleborn Servers Are Shutting Down
Unfortunately, Battleborn just never managed to find the same success as other similar games.
Released only a few weeks before Overwatch, another hero shooter, the game got overshadowed and lost a vast majority of its player base to Overwatch in a short space of time and was never able to gain those players back.
According to SteamDB, at the time of writing this there are just 6 players online, with the gaming peaking at just 18 players.
Considering the game is a 5v5 team shooter, there actually aren't enough people playing it to fill a match.
What Is Battleborn
Battleborn is a 5v5 hero shooter, very similar to Blizzard's Overwatch.
It was developed by Gearbox, the developers behind the Borderlands series, and published by 2K.
The game launched in 2016 but its player count fell quickly due to the release of Overwatch a short time later.
Battleborn also features a PVE story mode, something that did set it apart from most other similar titles, however this wasn't enough to sway players to come back.
Players are able to choose from 30 unique characters to take part in modes such as Incursion, Meltdown, Capture, and Face-off.
The servers for the game shut down later this month and then the game will become completely unplayable, unless a group of modders manage to get the game back online at some point through private servers.
Who knows, it might gain a resurgence in popularity in the future with private servers.
But for now, hopefully those six players also own Overwatch.
