News just in: Mojang has confirmed that the upcoming Minecraft's Caves & Cliffs update, known by many as 1.17, has been split into two parts.

There's a new preview here for the Caves and Cliffs update coming to Minecraft later this year. It gives us a fantastic look at the telescopic tool, the Spyglass, tinted glass options, crystals and more.

Minecraft Caves & Cliffs Release Date


Part One of Caves & Cliffs is still set to release in Summer 2021. No final release date has been given, but the second half has been delayed until Holiday 2021.

Since Mojang is set to provide "some deep dives into the summer update over the coming weeks," we'll probably get some news soon.

We'll let you know as soon as a concrete release date is announced for Caves & Cliff part one.

What's Included in Part One

It's not clear whether part one of Caves & Cliffs will still being referred to as 1.17, but we do know what's planned to be included.

These aren't the official patch notes, they'll come later, but it gives Minecraft players a good idea on how the split in two will work.

Much of the confirmed content is new block types, which you can see below, but more will be announced soon.


In their FAQ page, Mojang says the following is set to come in part one of Caves & Cliffs:

"The first part of the Caves & Cliffs Update will focus on some cute and fun mobs, cool items, and new blocks such as: Goat, Axolotl, Crystals + Spyglass + Geodes + Tinted Glass, Copper + Lightning Rod, Glow Squid + Glow Ink, Powder Snow, Lush Cave Blocks, Dripstone Cave Blocks, Deepslate + Ore Variants, Glow Lichen, and Multiplayer Sleeping Rule (Java only)."

Why Caves & Cliffs Has Been Delayed

Mojang succinctly explained why the update is being delayed. They said:

"The decision to release Caves & Cliffs in two parts is the result of taking on our most ambitious update to date while our team also continues to navigate the challenges of working remotely."
