League of Legends is one of the longest-standing live-service titles in the video game space. Launching in October of 2009, this free-to-play MOBA has long reigned as one of the most played games worldwide. Part of that is due to the developers, Riot Games, willingness to keep the game constantly updated, especially when it comes to the game's playable characters, or as their better known, champions.
With over 160 champions in League of Legends, there are tons for players to pick and learn. From Juggernauts and Tanks who hold it down in the top lane to Enchanters and Controllers that support their team from the bottom lane, there is a champion for every type of player.
However, some of these champions tend to be left behind, especially when it comes to older ones. Be it their kit, how their spells work with other champions, or others, sometimes these champions need to be brought back to speed to the current style of play. That's where mid-scope updates come into play.

What are mid-scope updates in League of Legends?
To put it simply, mid-scope updates are significant updates to champions that update their abilities, animations, visual effects, or sound effects. Unlike other updates, namely VGUs, these updates don't adjust a champion's model, voiceovers, or lore, as these types of updates take more time to plan out.
Sometimes, these mid-scope updates end up creating a whole new champion, but most of the time these updates look to keep the essence of the champion intact, they just work on putting them up to date with the current state of League of Legends.
When it comes to selecting champions for mid-scope updates, the developers over at Riot Games look at champions that have "lost a bit of their shine over the years" or have become problematic for the game, i.e. when it comes to balancing or their overall power in the Summoner's Rift. Players can look at Olaf as an example, as the Berserker gave developers a tough time primarily when it pertained to pro-play.
In 2022, Riot posted nearly 10 mid-scope updates for champions such as Tahm Kench, Taliyah, Rell, and others, and players can expect to get more in 2023, starting with Jax in LoL 13.1 and Neeko after that.
