Recent leak means GTA 6 won't be set in the past

GTA 6 has yet to be officially announced by Rockstar Games, but there have plenty of leaks giving info on what it could look like.

A recent leak could point to a specific time period that the game is set in, squashing hopes that we could see another 80s themed GTA game.

Where Will GTA 6 Be Set?

It has been widely speculated that GTA 6 will take place in Vice City, which is based on Miami, Florida.

This rumour/leak makes sense with GTA 4 taking place in Liberty City, the setting for GTA 3, and GTA V taking place in Los Santos, the wider location of GTA: San Andreas.

After all, this leaves Vice City as the only location not to receive a modern title.

There have also been map leaks since that suggest it's set in stone if they're to be believed.

So when would a Vice City-based GTA 6 take place?

Cryptocurrency In GTA 6

Trusted leaker Tom Henderson noted on Twitter that GTA 6 will feature cryptocurrency as a form of in-game currency.

"I heard recently that in GTA 6, some missions will reward you in bitcoin instead of cash for completing some missions. The stock market feature will return, with the addition of a broker for different cryptocurrencies. If GTA 6 incorporates this right, it's huge for crypto.
Just so there's no confusion, I mean in-game payments of bitcoin. These payments will come from the more higher up characters that needs to transfer high amounts of "untraceable cash and fast".
Just so there's even less confusion - I'm not joking. This is what I heard from someone that I trust and it will likely not be called "Bitcoin" per say - But it will be a cryptocurrency."

If true, this confirms that GTA 6 has a fairly strict range for when it could be set.

Bitcoin was created in 2009, and not particularly common for a good while. With this in mind, if these leaks are to be believed, GTA 6 likely wouldn't be set any time before 2016.

Rockstar as a company always has their finger on the pulse when it comes to pop culture and current trends, adding social media and the stock market to GTA V.

So while it would be fun to see Vice City in the 70s or 80s, all of the additional content that Rockstar can put in the game by keeping it current makes it worth setting the game in the modern-day.
