Do You Need Xbox Live?

You do not need an active Xbox Live subscription to play Fortnite.

This wasn't always the case though. It is only recently that Microsoft managed to confirm that free-to-play titles on Xbox would be truly free-to-play.
You Do Need An Account Though
Although Fortnite is free to play on Xbox, you will still need an Xbox Live account.
This doesn't need a paid subscription, but you need the Xbox account in order to add Fortnite to your library and download it to your console.
It also, much like an Epic Games account would, allows you to keep all your progress and any purchases.
