FIFA 23: We MUST see these additions for FUT Heroes to thrive in Ultimate Team

FUT Heroes are new cards introduced in FIFA 22 Ultimate Team, working in a similar way to Icons, except with strong links depending on their specific league.

The latest promo, FUT Captains, has seen upgrades brought to the cards for the first time, so we thought it was as good a time as any to assess how the new boys have fared.

Have FUT Heroes been a success? Will they make a return in FIFA 23? What changes could they receive next season? Read on to find out.

Origin Story

19 new cards bravely strode into FIFA 22, ready to tackle any adversaries that came their way.

The FUT Heroes may not have been in the same class as Icons, but they were a willing and able sidekick, with ratings ranging from 85 OVR to 89 OVR.

Without a doubt, David Ginola was the star man.

Not only did he possess incredibly attributes, but his Ligue 1 and French links were perfect for the meta.

During the early game, the Heroes had their heyday, some of the most powerful cards around, but those glorious times were short-lived, with change coming too soon for these greats of the game.

The Fall

FIFA Ultimate Team is an ever-changing space, and to stay relevant as a card you need to keep up with the power curve.

Unfortunately, most of the FUT Heroes just weren't ready for the fight after a month or two, with Team of the Week and regular promos blowing them out of the water.

There were some exceptions, with the aforementioned Ginola still holding his own, along with his Ligue 1 companion Abedi Pele, who are both still seeing some play to this day.

For the vast majority, however, the time had come to hang up their shirt and hope for a reboot in FIFA 23.

The Comeback

EA had other plans for the fallen Heroes, introducing the FUT Captains promo to breathe some new life into the cards.

After many leaks and much delay, we finally saw the Heroes fly again, with hefty boosts handed out to those deemed worthy.

The biggest increase we've seen so far has been the +6 overall given to Clint Dempsey and Freddie Ljungberg, however, it has been the 93 OVR Antonio Di Natale that has really stolen the show.

His stats are now comparable to a Prime Icon Moments card, a lethal finisher who can outclass any defender.

It was just what was needed for the cards, although only 10 of the 19 are set to gain the upgrade.

A Brighter Future

With FIFA 23 just around the corner, what will the future hold in store for FUT Heroes?

We fully expect to see them return in Ultimate Team, hopefully, with more players added to the ranks.

Something needs to be fixed regarding the power curve, possibly with multiple upgrades coming for them throughout the season, as we have with Base, Mid, Prime and Moments Icons.

MULTI-LEAGUE LINKS - Assigning FUT Heroes multiple leagues would add to their power

Multiple leagues could be added to their card too, highlighting their career path and also giving them the ability to create strong links for hybrid teams.

The FUT Captains promo has succeeded in not just revitalising Heroes cards, but also bringing a variation of players to a promo, so we would love to see it return.

There are definitely some changes that EA could bring in to make Heroes cards better, and we look forward to seeing if they explore those options.

For now, it looks like FUT Heroes are here to stay, and we can't wait to see what the future holds for them.
