A new era of football transfers has seen the transfer values of defenders sky-rocket over the last few years.
Most recently, Harry Maguire became the world’s most expensive centre back for a whopping £85 million.
With the defenders becoming more valuable in real life, will this affect their FIFA 20 rating predictions?
Virgil van Dijk (OVR 88 – 91)
Liverpool’s number four Virgil van Dijk has physical prowess, mobility and calmness making him a fan favourite in both real life and on FIFA 19. For the whole of last season, an attacker failed to dribble past VVD showing his sheer dominance as a defender. He also picked up UEFA Player of the Year 2019. The top spot remains in close contention between VVD and Sergio Ramos.
Sergio Ramos (OVR 91 – 90)
Club: Real Madrid
Rumour ridden Sergio Ramos was ready to quit the Spanish giants, however these have disappeared as manager Zinedine Zidane appears to have persuaded his captain to stay. Year after year Ramos dominates in his position proving why he has been regarded as the best centre half in the world, and even in a difficult Real Madrid season, still chipped in with 11 goals from defence.

Kalidou Koulibaly (OVR 88 – 89)
After Virgil van Dijk, Kalidou Koulibaly was the best defender in the world last season, which says it all. Napoli have a real gem on their hands, not only because of his breathtaking ability but also because he doesn’t seem to be too intent on moving to a bigger club. If he were keen to leave, the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona would be swarming.
Giorgio Chiellini (OVR 90 – 89)
One of the best defenders to play in the Serie A, veteran defender Giorgio Chiellini has been a rock on FIFA for many years. At 34 years’ old, the Italian may not be at the peak of his powers so don’t be surprised if his overall slips slightly from 90 on FIFA 20. A serious injury at the start of the new campaign could cause this to drop further.
Diego Godin (OVR 90 – 88)
Club: Inter Milan
To sign one of the finest centre-backs of the last decade on a free is always going to be a scalp, regardless of age. Diego Godin may be 33 but is still a very capable defender whose leadership on the pitch will be a massive boost. On account of his age, his rating will drop to 88.
Toby Alderweireld (OVR 87 – 88)
Club: Tottenham Hotspur
Belgian centre half Toby Aldweireled has had his name in the rumour mill on more than the odd occasion with sources suggesting a move abroad is imminent. Alderweireld remains Spurs’ best defender with a very nice 53 clean sheets in 142 appearances. His stable performances both European and domestic has given him a well-deserved upgrade from 88 to 89.

Mats Hummels (OVR 89 – 87)
Club: Borrusia Dortmund
Despite not being the player he was of two seasons ago, a return to Borussia Dortmund could see Mats Hummels revitalised. 30 is not old for a defender, and international team manager Joachim Low has ruled him out of contention for Germany, meaning he will stay fresh for BVB this term. Following his £34 million return to Signal Iduna Park, Hummels will look to control and guide his new back four to Bundesliga silverware.
