Cyberpunk 2077 has been a smash hit all round since it launched a few days ago.
It became the biggest PC launch ever and the project turned a profit on day one.
One region that it is selling well in is China, but it hasn't been officially released there.
Despite not actually releasing in China, Cyberpunk 2077 has sold extremely well.
Asian market analyst Daniel Ahmad gave some insight into the launch in China when the game finally released on December 10.
Due to China's internet restrictions, which means a lot of western sites aren't accessible, they have their own versions of sites we use, including streaming platforms.
On a popular Chinese streaming platform, their equivalent of Twitch, more than 19 million viewers watched over 7,500 streamers play Cyberpunk 2077 on launch day.
For comparison, Twitch cracked over 1 million concurrent viewers.
Cyberpunk 2077 did really well in pre-orders despite not being released in China yet.
China has a very active grey market for video games, allowing players to get hold of games that aren't officially released.
The game still requires approval from the government's State Administration of Press and Publication before it can be officially released in the country.
Instead players have had to rely on unauthorized Steam usage and importing the game from international stores and platforms.
DO NOT BUY CYBERPUNK 2077
The Chinese government began a social media campaign to stop people from buying Cyberpunk 2077 due to an entry in a Cyberpunk wiki that claimed that Taiwan is "not actually a part of China."
This may have been what caused the game to be banned, despite CD Projekt Red not being responsible for the entry.
It isn't clear yet whether CD Projekt Red are trying to get the game released in the Chinese market, but with over 8 million pre-orders and strong sales in China, maybe they don't need to bother with all of the red tape and just let the grey market continue to sell the game.
Cyberpunk 2077 will be available at launch on:
- PC via GOG, Epic Games Store, and Steam
- PlayStation 4
- Xbox One
- Google Stadia
What About PS5 & Xbox Series X|S?
CD Projekt Red have confirmed that the game will be coming to both the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
However, this won't be at launch and will instead be released hopefully sometime in 2021.
The good news is, due to both consoles' backwards compatibility, Cyberpunk 2077 will be playable on both next gen consoles at launch.
But, players will be using the PS4/Xbox One version of the game, meaning they won't get any of the improved graphics, ray tracing etc.
