Call of Duty Vanguard's Open Beta is almost here and we're just a couple of hours away from the start of Early Access on Xbox and PC - and full Open Beta access for PlayStation players. Here's everything you need to know in preparation for the Vanguard Beta and what to expect.

Table of Contents

NEW CONTENT - What's different?

If you played the Vanguard Beta last weekend, you'll know a little bit about what to expect - however, Sledgehammer Games is throwing some new content at us for the second weekend of Beta access.

Eagles Nest, a new 6v6 multiplayer map, is joining Search and Destroy as the two main additions to Call of Duty Vanguard's Beta offerings. We're also going to get a Champion Hill Solos playlist - which, to be honest, sounds difficult.

The first weekend of Beta access was a bit of a grab bag, but you should be able to just play Team Deathmatch in this weekend's Vanguard Beta. We're sure Sledgehammer Games has something else up their sleeves too - but, we'll just have to wait and see what else might show up.

EARLY ACCESS - When does this start?

If you've pre-ordered Call of Duty Vanguard, or been lucky enough to grab yourself a Vanguard Beta code from social media - we know Call of Duty has been handing a few out - then you'll be entitled to Early Access to the Vanguard Beta ahead of the Open Beta period.

Early Access starts on September 16th at the following times:

  • 10:00 PST
  • 13:00 EST
  • 18:00 BST

You'll only need one of these Early Access Vanguard Beta codes on Xbox and PC, though. If you're a PlayStation player, the Vanguard Beta is open to everyone from September 16th! You can redeem any Vanguard Beta codes you might have here - - there's still time to sort yourself out for some early access on Xbox and PC.

START DATE - What about the rest of the Beta?

The Vanguard Open Beta - where you won't need any codes - is scheduled to start on September 18th at the following times:

  • 10:00 PST
  • 13:00 EST
  • 18:00 BST

This is the perfect time to "try before you buy" - as you don't even need to have PS Plus or Xbox Gold Live for this one!

As we've said before, you'll be able to access the Open Beta on PlayStation platforms from September 16th, however... That's not so much longer to wait for Xbox and PC players. Who knows, you might be able to nab yourself a Vanguard Beta code from Call of Duty between now and then, anyway!

PRELOAD - How to get yourself set up?

If you want to preload the Vanguard Beta ahead of Early Access - or the Open Beta itself - you should be able to right now. There's a couple of ways to find the Vanguard Beta on your chosen platform and we have a quick-fire guide for you below.

  • PlayStation Vanguard Beta
    • Redeem Vanguard Beta Code via PlayStation Store
    • Search "Vanguard Beta" on PlayStation Store
    • Select the "Vanguard" tab of the main menu on Warzone, Modern Warfare, or Black Ops Cold War
  • Xbox Vanguard Beta
    • Redeem Vanguard Beta Code via Xbox Store
    • Search "Vanguard Beta" on Xbox Store
    • Select the "Vanguard" tab of the main menu on Warzone, Modern Warfare, or Black Ops Cold War
  • PC via Vanguard Beta
    • Select Vanguard Beta from the "Partner Games" section of the menu
    • Select the "Vanguard" tab of the main menu on Warzone, Modern Warfare, or Black Ops Cold War

We don't know exact file sizes yet, but the Vanguard Beta starts off as a smaller download before updating. During the first weekend, the Vanguard Beta was initially around 9GB on PS5 before inflating up to around 35GB. Expect to need at least 40GB spare for this weekend.

CROSSPLAY - Does it have these features?

To put it plainly, yes - it is going to have Crossplay features. The Open Beta weekend has been referred to as the Crossplay Beta a number of times in official communications from Call of Duty and Sledgehammer Games. On top of this, we know that cross-progression and integration is a huge part of what Call of Duty want to do going forward in an effort to offer an open social experience to Call of Duty players.

Much like in Warzone, we expect Crossplay features to be enabled by default on the Vanguard Beta when it starts later today.

BRING THE PAIN - The walls aren't the only thing you can shoot through

If you want to toggle these and disable Crossplay features in the Vanguard Open Beta, you're going to need to head to the "Account" section of the options menu - much like you would in Warzone - and select "Disable" under "Crossplay".

GET READY FOR A FIGHT - Vanguard is relentless in the best way

There's going to be a total of nine perks available alongside over 15 weapons and a handful of scorestreaks. The MP-40, MG-42, M1 Garand, Sten, Kar-98K... All your favourites will be included. You can't fully level weapons in the Vanguard Open Beta, though, but you'll be able to get a taste for the new Gunsmith options.

In addition to this, the Vanguard Open Beta is going to showcase three levels of Combat Pacing on the selection of maps available: Tactical, Assault, and Blitz. Here's what that means:

  • Tactical: These are the lobbies that franchise veterans know well. This is the experience that you're used to with classic Call of Duty combat timing. Tactical Combat Pacing is always 6v6.
  • Assault: Balanced combat pacing that gives you enough room to breathe and a lot of targets to kill. In Beta Weekend 1, player counts will vary between 20-28 players.
  • Blitz: High-action lobbies where the intensity is cranked up to frenetic levels. Prepare for plenty of combat when choosing to join a Blitz. In Beta Weekend 1, player counts will vary between 28-48 players.
